„Future of Families – Families of the Future”

2015. szeptember 29.

Brussels, 30 September 2015
The “demographic winter” is typical of the majority of the European countries.  An obvious solution to these demographic challenges might be a good family policy in the Member States. Bearing in mind the good examples and best practices, Members should consult more on the matter.

It is necessary to highlight the role of marriage among the different types of relationships. According to surveys, marriage is the most productive relationship in terms of childbirth rate. Furthermore, health and psychological problems occur the least in marriages. We are pleased that – in line with the majority opinion of our country – the Fundamental Law of Hungary especially protects the institution of marriage.

In the European Union the „institution of family” is rarely put in a positive context. Despite the fact that families are the ultimate nucleus of our societies, its members are rather treated individually, highlighting the rights and conflicts of the single individuals. This practice breaks the unity of families. We should return to treat families as one unit as well as a unity, instead of placing individuals in the forefront. Demographic challenges could truly be treated and handled by measures which aim to strengthen and improve the situation of the families.

The conference held on the 30th September 2015 in the European Parliament, Brussels (JAN6Q1), entitled “Future of Families – Families of the Future” has been designed around these ideas. The conference is co-organised by Dr. Ildikó Gáll-Pelcz, Vice-President of the EP, György Hölvényi, Member of the Hungarian EPP Delegation, and by two Hungarian civil organisations, namely the Confederation of Family Associations in the Carpathian Basin (KCSSZ) and the National Association of Large Families in Hungary (NOE).

By building on their practical experience as well as by cooperating closely with politicians in EU-countries, members of the civil society can actively contribute to the proper implementation of family policies and good fulfilment of relevant measures.

The aim of our organisations is to form the public opinion in order to make it more family-friendly; as well as to spread the family-friendly approach. This can help to create an atmosphere in which families are glad to have more children.
